Growing Information

Gardenia jasminoides thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers rich, well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Moderate watering is required to keep the soil evenly moist. These plants grow moderately to a mature height of 3 to 8 feet, with smaller sizes expected when grown in containers. Space plants 6 to 8 feet apart for optimal growth. Blooming occurs from late spring to mid-summer, producing highly fragrant flowers often used in perfumes and floral arrangements. Suitable for USDA zones 8 to 11, Gardenias can also be grown indoors in cooler climates.

Gardenia seeds may take time to germinate, so maintaining warm temperatures and consistent moisture is essential. Using a humidity dome or an indoor seed-starting setup can improve germination success. Transplant seedlings once they are well established for best results.
